DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA

The Amalgamated Transit Union has an immediate opening for an attorney. The International Union is ramping up its campaigns to organize strategically, bargain in increasingly difficult times, fight privatization, and build alliances with bus riders and community groups to preserve and expand public transit systems. The Associate Counsel will provide advice and assist in strategic planning related to organizing, collective bargaining, privatization and mitigating the effects of contractor turnover on ATU properties. ILLINOIS

The Air Line Pilots Association, International, the largest airline pilots union in the world and the largest non-governmental aviation safety organization in the world, seeks an experienced Labor Relations Counsel for our office in Rosemont, IL to represent 12,500 United pilots. The job is the same as that described above for Georgia.


The Chicago & Midwest Regional Joint Board, Workers United, is seeking an in-house attorney with one (1) to three (3) years of experience as either an attorney handling labor and/or employment matters or as a union business agent or organizer. The union also will consider a recent or future law graduate with union-related or NLRB-related work or internship experience and evidence of a strong commitment to the labor movement. The ideal candidate would be fluent in both English and Spanish and have good computer research, writing and document preparation skills. He or she would also have some experience in union or community organizing and an interest, demonstrated through prior job experience, legal clinic work or moot court competition, in developing litigation skills. The attorney will be based in Chicago and represent union members in both Chicago and the surrounding states. The attorney will provide services for which both union business agents and in-house attorneys are usually responsible, and, eventually, take responsibility for grievance arbitrations, work before the NLRB and state labor relations boards and other administrative agencies and for internal employment law matters such as the union's personnel policies, staff union grievances and unemployment issues. Salary will be commensurate with experience; health and welfare and pension benefits are provided. Eventual licensure in Illinois will be required. As the largest private sector labor union in North America, the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW) represents more than 1.3 million workers in the United States and Canada. Its members are employed principally in retail food stores; food processing, packing and manufacturing plants; department and drugs stores; and distillery and chemical industries. Law clerks provide legal writing and research support to in-house and outside attorneys on a wide variety of issues and cases, including labor, employment and related court and administrative proceedings. Law clerks work closely with attorneys. We endeavor to involve law clerks as much as possible in discussions with attorneys and union representatives so that they have an understanding of how their work fits into a particular case, or in the development of overall strategies for organizing and representing workers. Law clerks will be permitted to use papers they draft for writing samples where appropriate.
