The AFL-CIO Office of the General Counsel is seeking applications for an Associate General Counsel to join a staff of nine lawyers who work on a broad range of legal issues in many different programmatic areas on behalf of the AFL-CIO and its affiliated unions. The Office of the General Counsel engages in litigation before the U.S. Supreme Court, Courts of Appeals, National Labor Relations Board, and other bodies in cases of broad importance to the labor movement. We assist in the development of, and advocacy for, federal, state, and local legislative and executive branch initiatives to advance workers’ rights. We staff the AFL-CIO Lawyers Coordinating Committee and assist with the development and implementation of LCC programs. We provide advice and assistance to all the departments of the AFL-CIO, including the Organizing, Political and International Departments. We advise the executive officers and senior staff on a wide range of policy and governance issues and we ensure the Federation’s compliance with governing laws. We are looking for a lawyer with strong analytical, writing and communication skills and experience representing unions to work on a broad range of issues. IUE-CWA, the Industrial Division of the Communications Workers of America, is currently seeking a staff counsel with five (5) or more years of experience, predominantly in contract negotiations, which could include work as a union representative, local officer or business agent. The staff counsel will assist IUE-CWA staff in all traditional labor and employment law areas (NLRA, LMRDA, FMLA, etc.), but will have a specific focus on collective bargaining and troubleshooting difficult bargaining relationships. Successful candidates will have experience navigating all aspects of negotiations, from the mobilization stage through ratification, and will have a working knowledge of offensive bargaining. Knowledge of employer research and contract-costing a plus. This position will report to the IUE-CWA President and General Counsel, but will also be plugged in to the expertise and resources of CWA's Legal Department and national network of lawyers. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, flexible, able to work with diverse groups, social justice-minded and have a good sense of humor. Some experience with the manufacturing sector is a plus. The Workers Defense Project (WDP) seeks a Project Attorney in Dallas. The Dallas Staff Attorney will directly represent low-wage workers in employment claims such as wage theft, injury, and discrimination cases as part of the Employment and Legal Services Department. The Staff Attorney will oversee legal support staff and volunteers. WDP uses a wide range of legal, administrative, and community-based tactics to assist low-wage workers with recovering their wages or seeking redress for legal violations on the worksite.
